According to the latest MetLife and U.S. Chamber of Commerce survey, published July 14, small businesses are having difficulty finding workers and say they are having to work more themselves or are asking staff to work longer hours. Despite having plans for increasing staff, most small businesses have not yet begun to recruit, interview, or hire new talent this year.
For those owners who are still trying to fill open positions, they have had to change their approach. Nearly three-fourths–72%–report they have changed their hiring practices to attract new talent. Of those responding to the poll, 21% of small business owners said they are offering a hybrid or remote work environment, while 22% said they are giving employees more flexible hours and 24% are offering increased pay.
